A Nation Still Divided

Tuesday, November 6, 2012

Tonight’s election result does nothing to bring this divided nation together. The popular vote is almost dead even, (at the time of writing), it is Obama 52,307,548 to Romney’s 51,850,797.

Despite the Electoral College numbers, 303 Obama to 203 Romney; with Florida literally calling it a night to complete their count later on Wednesday. We as a nation, have not given President Barack Obama a solid mandate to continue his march forward.

So where the hell are we? The Democrat and Republican parties have spent a combined $2 billion dollars for us to have no clear winner. The Republicans still hold the majority in the House of Representatives (219 R, 158D, 58 yet undecided) and the Senate is still held by the Democrats (51 D, 44 R, 3 still in play).

We have huge legislative issues still on the table, another debt ceiling increase, taxmageddon, Social Security and Medicare headed towards insolvency, as well as the funding and running of Obamacare.

So there President Obama gives his victory speech with out one damn word about how he will unite this country, or solve it’s problems. He can only hand out bouquets to his party faithfuls, it’s like I’m in Red China at the height of Mao’s reign.

The reason he cannot unite us and make all of us feel proud is because it is not within him. Obama can only play the hand he knows, Statism, Government is your savior and I am your leader. We’ll be hearing school kids singing ‘Oh Obama’ again in days.

So there is “Dear Leader” speechifying to an adoring audience, one wonders if he is capable of hearing the cries of the rest of us little people out there?

Will he finally tack to the center to win consensus? Or just cry for unity, while he juts his nose in the air? Can Obama be respectful and less arrogant to be a true President of ALL the people?

I strongly doubt it.

I’m reminded of Tennessee Ernie Ford’s lyrics from “Sixteen Tons”

You load sixteen tons what do you get
Another day older and deeper in debt
Saint Peter don’t you call me ’cause I can’t go
I owe my soul to the company store
