Obama Highjacks Another Press Briefing to Campaign

Thursday, December 8, 2011

For the second time this week there was President Obama in the James S. Brady Press Briefing Room campaigning to the Washington Press Corps.

On Monday he was there to warn Congress that they had to pass a bill to extend his Payroll Tax Holiday before the end of December, driving the point home with a shameless stunt of a countdown clock on two television monitors.

On Thursday, Obama was there again to continue his threats hours before a Senate vote on the bill and to complain on the failed nomination of Richard Cordray as director of the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau.

The cloture vote on the payroll tax bill failed 50-48 and the Republicans blocked the Cordray nomination as a protest over the abundant new bureaucracies the White House continues to create to bypass the authority of Congress.

Then Obama foolishly took questions from the press. The first question, “Republican candidates have taken aim at your approach to foreign policy, particularly the Middle East and Israel, and accused you of appeasement.  I wanted to get your reaction to that.”

Obama, ignored the question and replied, “Ask Osama bin Laden and the 22-out-of-30 top al Qaeda leaders who’ve been taken off the field whether I engage in appeasement.  Or whoever is left out there, ask them about that.”

That is exactly how Barack Obama campaigns and “leads” by changing the subject.

Obama cannot answer the question on his treatment of Israel or how he will stop Iran from developing nuclear weapons. When asked a second time he said, “But what I can say with respect to Iran, I think it’s very important to remember, particularly given some of the political noise out there, that this administration has systematically imposed the toughest sanctions on Iraq — on Iran ever. “

That is a flat out lie. Last week after the Senate passed a bill 100-0 to penalize foreign financial institutions that do business with Iran’s central bank, the main conduit for its oil revenues. The administration pressed lawmakers to soften the proposed sanctions.

In regards to Obama’s Payroll Tax bill, the Republican have pushed to require him to approve the construction of the Keystone XL pipeline from Canada in order for them to support it.

The pipeline project is projected to create between 7,000 to 13,000 shovel ready jobs within the construction industry where unemployment is very high

The President has said repeatedly that he would veto any bill with the pipeline project attached.

“I know the suggestion right now is, is that somehow, well, this Keystone issue will create jobs, But here’s what I know:  However many jobs might be generated by a Keystone pipeline, they’re going to be a lot fewer than the jobs that are created by extending the payroll tax cut and extending unemployment insurance.

This statement alone is the best reason to vote him out of office. Receiving Unemployment Insurance is NOT a job and getting an additional $19.23 a week in your paycheck means you have a job.

Barack Obama likes to whine, vilify, and pander to hand picked audiences. Scolding the Republicans in front of the Press Corps will not lead to embarrassing questions later.

Nor will a speech before a partisan crowd in Osawatomie, Kansas, on everyone doing their “fair share”, bring any ridicule. However I’ll offer mine.

The choice of Osawatomie was a blatant attempt for Barack Obama to compare himself to Teddy Roosevelt a progressive, who made a speech there in 1910. Watching this speech I thought I accidentally tuned into Saturday Night Live.

While Obama pleaded for the reasons why he needed a continued payroll tax cut for the “middle class”, by adding more taxes to the “rich” and invoking Roosevelt’s name, he forgot that the IRS didn’t exist until 1913.

Obama said the words “fair share” over 26 times, however when Federal Income Tax was established, it was 7% on incomes over $500,000; which equates to about $10 million today.

Here is another factoid; in 1910 the total of all Federal, State and local government spending was 8% of GDP, comprised of 2.5% Federal, 0.7% state, and 4.8% local.

Today, due to Obama’s massive spending, the Federal share is 23% of a total of all government spending of 40% GDP.

More apparent in his speech is the fact that Barack Obama is embracing and trumpeting his socialist views to satisfy his base of hard core leftists and the poor.

The Republican nominee for President can win by hammering home the failed agenda of Obama and the Democrat party. Keep repeating the job loss numbers, those who have lost homes, those who have left the  job market, the value of the U.S. dollar and our deficit. It doesn’t matter if it is Newt Gingrich or Mitt Romney. We can win by showing that President Obama’s record is even worse than Jimmy Carter’s. That’s a failure of epic proportions.

Obama, just like last year, promised to delay his planned seventeen day vacation to Hawaii until Congress voted his way. Who really cares.

That White House countdown clock should really be about how many days until his next vacation or better yet the number of days he has in office.
