Democratic Congressional Majority — Impotent

Saturday, November 17, 2007

Just over a year ago the Democratic party was celebrating its victory of their first majority in Congress since 1993. Nancy Pelosi hailed it as a referendum by the voters as “A New Direction for America”. Pelosi and Harry Reid stated that they were going to end the war and bring the troops home.

After losing 63 votes on ending the war – all tied to funding it — the Democrats have proven to America that they are woefully impotent in providing any real legislation. They have failed the voters again and again and again. The latest polls give Congress a 25% approval rating, eleven points lower than George Bush!

Last November Nancy Pelosi promised, “In the first 100 legislative hours, Democrats will get to work immediately to restore civility, integrity, and fiscal responsibility to the House, while increasing prosperity, opportunity, and security for all Americans.”

Included in the Democrats’ first 100 legislative hours were:
• Draining the swamp – break the link between lobbyists and legislation and commit to pay-as-you-go budgeting, no new deficit spending
• Making America more secure – implement the independent 9/11 Commission recommendations
• Giving Americans a raise – increase the minimum wage
• Making college more affordable – cut the interest rate in half on federally subsidized student loans
• Making health care more affordable – negotiate for lower prescription drug prices
• Ending subsidies for Big Oil
• Giving hope to families with devastating diseases – allow stem cell research

They have only managed to pass 2 of their promised legislation: A minimum wage bill became law in late May 2007 and the stem cell law was passed in August of 2007 and immediately vetoed by President George W. Bush.

In a statement broadcast on Fox News Oct. 30, President Bush, charged that Congress had failed to send a single annual appropriations bill to his desk. Adding, this is “the worst record for a Congress in 20 years. Congress is not getting its work done.”

What about energy independence and illegal immigration? Their record on this is 0. Even if a Democratic President gets elected in ’08 don’t look for any improvement – the Democrats have failed even worse than the Republicans — who they accused of doing nothing. The Democrats have proved themselves to be less than zero.

I’m going to bring one of my signature phrases here, “Remember your oath of enlistment? REMEMBER YOUR OATH OF ENLISTMENT!” The part about “All enemies, foreign and DOMESTIC”!
