Immigration Bill S1348 Morphs Into NEW Amnesty Bill S1639

Update: 06/27/07: The 2nd Cloture vote on the NEW Amnesty Bill S1639 is now set for 11:30 A.M, Tuesday, June 26th 10:30AM Thursday, June 28th. Keep the pressure on and keep calling especially early Thursday morning!

The Heritage Foundation says that the hacks in the Senate have been meeting again behind closed doors to fashion a “New” Immigration Bill: S.1639: The Secure Borders, Economic Opportunity and Immigration Reform Act of 2007

“Now, an altogether new bill (S. 1639) has been introduced by Senators Ted Kennedy and Arlen Specter. It seems to incorporate the previous legislation, with some amendments. After it is read into the Senate calendar on Wednesday, the Majority Leader will be able to proceed to consider this legislation anew at any time; debate is likely to follow later this week, with a final vote very soon thereafter.”

I read the draft that is available at the Heritage Foundation link above. This one is over 400 pages and rehashes the original bill with some new language and the amendments passed two weeks ago. It’s still Amnesty before a border fence and work place enforcement.

There are major holes in the bill, like Z visa holders would immediately be given Social Security numbers and the mandated processing time of 24 hours will allow terrorists and criminals to create a national security nightmare.
